‘Built From Nothing’ centers on the act of construction — materially and metaphorically. Using sand and stone gathered from the earth, Nikki builds texture directly onto the canvas, allowing the surface to rise, crack, and shift. The materials are both structural and ornamental: they form the body of the work while simultaneously embellishing it.
Rather than merely depicting landscape, Nikki incorporates it. Grain by grain, the canvas becomes layered with matter that once existed outside the studio — fragments of earth recontextualized into something intentional. The texture is tactile and dimensional, catching light and casting subtle shadows, emphasizing the physicality of the piece.
Sand carries connotations of impermanence, constantly moving and reshaping. Stone suggests endurance and weight. Together, they create tension between fragility and strength. By embedding them into the surface, Nikki explores how something seemingly ordinary — even overlooked — can be elevated, reinforced, and transformed.
“Built From Nothing” reflects the idea that creation doesn’t always begin with abundance. It can begin with what is available — with raw elements — and through attention and layering, become something substantial, refined, and enduring.
